Oaks Cloister
Philadelphia, PA
Powers & Company, Inc. was hired to complete a nomination to the National Register of Historic Places for the Oaks Cloister. The Oaks Cloister, a 3-story Tudor Revival style residence and studio, is located in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA. Constructed between 1900 and 1927, the complex was the residence and design of Joseph M. Huston, best known as the architect of the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building. The Oaks Cloister is significant under Criterion C, Architecture. As both architect and client, the Oaks Cloister is a monument to both Joseph M. Huston and his career. The property derives its significance as an extraordinary and eclectic example of early 20th century architecture, which incorporates Tudor Revival, Renaissance Revival, Colonial Revival, Craftsman and Neoclassical styles and serves as domesticated adaptation of Huston’s most important commission, the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building.
